Sorry Murphy, I’ll Soon Be a Married Woman…Then Will You Leave Me Alone?
Posted by Bethany in Current Happenings, Family Matters on November 25, 2005
…because the tuxedoes aren’t here. That was the first thing. And did the company bother calling us to let us know? Nah. We get to find that out at 4:00 this afternoon. (Rehersal is at 5:00, dinner 6:00…and then it’s off to shop for something decent for the guys to wear.)
I must say I didn’t handle this news very graciously.
And then…worse than that…my sister, matron-of-honor that she is….doesn’t show up for rehersal. She’s notorious for being late, but this is my wedding rehersal….
Come to find out she’s been in a car wreck. A work truck was on the road ahead of her and a roll of orange tape flew out of his truck and hit her truck. It got all tangled up in the windsheild wipers and she couldn’t see …so she ran into a ditch….
She’s okay, thank goodness. And her two youngest boys that were with her are fine too. Such a blessing. But the truck is a bit messed up.
And my Shiloh flower girl is feeling much better! Yay! Such a relief!
I keep having to remind myself that all this is about a marriage and not a wedding. That it doesn’t matter what the guys wear, it matters that I’m getting married to the man I love…
Oh but they would have looked so great in tuxedoes!
A Sick Child on the Eve of Your Wedding
Posted by Bethany in Family Matters on November 25, 2005
…and what do you do?
Honestly, this scenario never came up in my mind. I’ve prepared myself for all others
…bridesmaids who are MIA…
…wedding protesters….
….fainting….
even me getting sick on my honeymoon….
…but I never considered one of my children would be ill.
She’s been complaining all morning of a terrible headache. She says her neck and shoulders ache also. She has been in bed all morning….which is unusual. She usually wakes up and gets right to her busy schedule that includes drawing, reading, looking for bugs, and entertaining her brother and the neighbor boys with her bossy ways!
Please pray that Shiloh will start feeling better soon….
Not just so my plans go more smoothly….but I want tommorrow to be a special day for her and Landon as well as Joshua and myself. And I don’t want her to remember the wedding as a time she had rather spent in bed….or remember throwing up during the ceremony….
I hate when my children get sick. And really, I’ve been quite blessed, as they are rarely ill. We tend to have a rather strong constitution in our family….but we do get sick on occasion.
Remember Shiloh in your prayers. Please.
*Update 10:26 p.m. * Shiloh is feeling much better. She threw-up earlier today. I’ve had her medicated and resting all day. By the time the rehersal dinner came around she was feeling great…she even wanted ice cream!
Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
Posted by Bethany in Uncategorized on November 24, 2005
I had big plans on writing a post on the origins of Thanksgiving and the ties it has to the birth of our nation. I was going to go into great detail about the strong Christian beliefs of our Pilgram forefathers and their desire to be missionaries to the Indians.
Then I was going to skulk about and link to other great Thanksgiving posts….
And I was going to go into great detail creating a list of things I’m thankful for on this Thanksgiving Day.
But it’s been a busy day already, and I have new future family members to meet, and two families to have a meal with….
…and I’m still working on wedding plans. (Saturday is the big day!)
So, although I’ll be having a wonderful Thanksgiving…I don’t have time to say anymore about it.
But, I do wish you a lovely Thanksgiving Day and encourage you to thank God especially for all the wonderful blessings he has bestowed upon you (I know they are too many to count!)
And know that one of my blessings I’m thankful for is the network of online friends I’ve recently made due to this blog. All my readers are a great blessing. Though that number be small, they be mighty!
Need More Hits?

I love humor. Of all types. But for some reason, I seem attracted to the cynics. Like my fiance, for instance.
So that’s probably why I like the humor found at this site. In particular, this post amused me quite a bit!
So, if your site needs more hits, check out some of her tips. I’m sure you will find one or two that will work for you!
I think I’ll try tip number 4!
4. Blog on the emerging purpose-driven contraceptive movement of Arminian Iraq war protesters and you’ll have it made. Include important words such as “Jessica Simpson”, “cheap ipods”, and “How to Cook a Turkey” in your post for Google purposes.
And thank you Amy, for being so amusing!

Shamelessly Skulking 11/19
Posted by Bethany in Bloggity Blog, Shamelessly Skulking on November 19, 2005
I was going to skip my shameless skulk…I’m getting married one week from today and life is busy! I have a shower to attend in a few hours and a house to clean as well. But my first stop of the day was too good to not share and I decided, well, why the heck not? Let’s skulk about a bit! (It’s really easy for me to find an excuse to go blog-hopping!)
Bill from Out of the Bloo has a short but sweet post on encouragement.
Encouragement – when spoken out of truth and not flattery – is golden.
So, go encourage someone! They will need it. We all do.
At Wittingshire Amanda quotes from the great G.K. Chesterton on neighbors.
We make our friends; we make our enemies; but God makes our next-door neighbour.
Lucky for me I have the world’s greatest neighbors! But I do recall neighbor meaning a bit more than the person who has a yard joined with yours….
She also has a cute converstaion post that took place between her and her sons…
And as always, lovely pictures. I wonder if she takes all these pictures herself. They are amazing!
And on one of my favorite preacher blogs, Rev-Ed discusses whether or not you should advertise your faith.
But the assumption is that a person wearing a cross must have some connection to Jesus. If that person doesn’t act like Jesus would have us act, the world cries, “Hypocrite!”
Read his post and tell me what you think!
And Blest With Sons is back! Yay!
And I have just recently found Job’s Tale. Check out the site…all of it. And pray for him and his family.
Kinda short, but good stuff! That is all I have time for this weekend! I have a wedding shower to attend in a few hours!
There shall be showers of blessing:
This is the promise of love;
There shall be seasons refreshing,
Sent from the Savior above.
I Love to Laugh
Uncle Albert:
I love to laugh
Loud and long and clear
I love to laugh
It’s getting worse ev’ry yearThe more I laugh
The more I fill with glee
And the more the glee
The more I’m a merrier me
It’s embarrassing!
The more I’m a merrier me!Mary Poppins:
Some people laugh through their noses
Sounding something like this “Mmm…”
Some people laugh through their teeth goodness sake
Hissing and fizzing like snakesBert:
Some laugh too fast
Some only blast – ha!
Others, they twitter like birds
Then there’s the kind
What can’t make up their mindUncle Albert:
When things strike me as funny
I can’t hide it inside
And squeak – as the squeakelers do
I’ve got to let go with a ho-ho-ho…
And a ha-ha-ha…too!All:
We love to laugh
Loud and long and clear
We love to laugh
So ev’rybody can hear
The more you laugh
The more you fill with glee
And the more the glee
The more we’re a merrier we!
Seriously, I could come up with a song for any topic….but this topic is musical once again. Well, if you want to call it that. I just finished my nightly roam through bloggy world and found this site. And of couse, I found this post which linked me to this, which is so incredibly funny I thought it would be a disservice not to share it!
Anyway…I think I prefer this group to the original artists! What say you?
Slogans!
Posted by Bethany in Goofiness, Shamelessly Skulking on November 14, 2005
I was skulking around a few pastor’s blogs (aren’t they interesting?) and while at Every Thought Captive I found this post. And that led me to this site where I created a few slogans!
If I type in Picturesque, I get:
Put a Picturesque in your tank.
Hrmmm…catchy!
And when I type in Bethany, I get:
Does She or Doesn’t She? Only Her Bethany Knows for Sure.
And since I really love internet gadgets and like to play, I do my kids! Type in Shiloh and you get:
I Want My Shiloh.
I felt that way once when Shiloh went on an vacation with her grandparents!
Type in Landon and wah-lah!
He Who Thinks Landon Drinks Landon.
Somehow that seems appropriate!
And I have to try my Joshua…
8 out of 10 Owners who Expressed a Preference said Their Cats Preferred Joshua.
and of course, I prefer Joshua too! But then, I’m not a cat…
I’ve also come to one other conclusion….I must be pretty shallow. Every Thought Captive had some really interesting posts and the only one I blog about is a dumb slogan maker!
A Thankful Heart is a Happy Heart
…I’m glad for what I have
It’s an easy way to start….
I’ve always liked that little song from Veggie Tales. And we all know it’s true, right? A thankful heart is a happy heart.
Then why is it so hard to be thankful?
I went to Winn-Dixie tonight. A mad rush trip right before church. Not exactly the best time to run to the store. (Every store down here is crazy post Katrina…) I suppose I thought everyone would be getting ready for church or something. Ha! It was very busy.
But no biggie. I’m certainly getting used to the madness around here…long lines, no parking spaces. I still thought I had enough time to get to church.
My cashier is a young teenage boy. Very friendly. He happens to have a $10.00 discount coupon he is scanning for all the customers. I see him scan the coupon for the couple in front of me. I assume it’s a $.50 off coupon or something (which I would be grateful for…let me tell you. I like coupons in all values!) When it’s my turn he tells me he’s gonna help me out a bit. He scans the coupoun and I look at the screen. To my utter amazement I have been discounted $10! Whoopie!
I gush out my sincere gratitude. Ten dollars! Wow! He stares at me…a bit in awe.
“I’ve given this discount to about 100 people today…and you are the first person who has thanked me,” says he.
“No way!” I exclaim. I’m shocked. I’m apalled. I’m horrified! A ten dollar discount is something to be grateful for. Don’t you agree? “Did they know what you were doing?” I inquire.
He then proceeds to explain to me that at first he assumed people didn’t know what he was doing. So he started telling customers he was taking ten dollars off their bill. He said he had just about decided to stop giving the discount because people were so ungrateful…but he just kept wondering how long it would take to get a thank you.
I’m still baffled. Then I’m rather smug…at my grateful heart. I mean hey, I’m pretty special. I was the one in a hundred who said thank you. I pat my pious back as I drive down the road conteplating the situation. *Er, hello Mr. Eighteen Wheeler, please don’t hit me.* I plan on blogging about just how ungrateful everyone else is while I seem to have things in the right perspective….(of course I was going to mask it somehow so that I didn’t sound so full of myself!)
Then I go to church. And my pastor puts a great big damper on my self-righteous thoughts…(he just so happens to be really great at doing that too!)
He speaks on how we act like we hate God. We don’t show appreciation for things. We are unthankful….
(I’m thinking of the situation before church and am congratulating myself on being thankful already today at this point.)
Then he explains….we eat food God provides…we wear clothing made by his materials…we live in houses built from his trees….
We go to jobs where we use skills he gifted us with…so we can take care of the families he blesses us with….
Marriage is his idea…families were his idea….
We’ve done nothing. And we tritely say a quick blessing as thanks before we eat and maybe in passing thank God for our family as we doze off to sleep and rarely give his provision another thought.
Ouch!
What has God done for me?
But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being {fell} upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed.
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
And yes…I am thankful…
I really am. But do I show it? Am I living my life in gratitude…or do I take advantage of God’s blessings…food, shelter, clothing, my job, my family….my salvation…the sacrifice God made…for me-and for you-that cost so dearly?
I think it would do me good to become more grateful. To be more thankful. To have a thankful heart….not just to have a happy heart, but because God has done so much for me…and he deserves it!
I’ve done nothing to deserve the blessings I’ve recieved…including $10 off my grocery bill!
Shamelessly Skulking 11/13
Posted by Bethany in Bloggity Blog, Shamelessly Skulking on November 13, 2005
I haven’t done a Shamelessly Skulking post since before Katrina due to lots and lots of computer issues. First, of course, I didn’t even have electricity for two weeks. Then, Cable One, was not exactly quick at hooking my internet back up. Well, about the time my internet gets hooked up, my site gets hacked….and so on and so on.
But I’m back to skulking around…and there’s lots of great posts I want to share. Some are rather old now…as I read them when I was unable to post but still want to share them.
Learning the Glad Surrender is a blog I discovered after the storm. I linked to an article Bonnie posted about Hurricane Katrina becaue I liked it. Since then I’ve dug through the archives of this blog and have found several posts of interest.
First, Bonnie frequently posts humorous things that will have you rolling on the floor laughing like this post about the worst first date ever .
It was midwinter and snowing…quite cold…and her date had taken her skiing in the mountains outside Salt Lake City, Utah. It was a day trip, and they had actually never met before and were essentially strangers. So as such–there would be no overnight stays. The outing was fun but relatively uneventful until they headed home late that afternoon. They were driving back down the mountain when she gradually began to realize that her extra grande-non-fat-decaf-latte-with-2-Splenda-hold-the-whip wasn’t such a great idea. They were about an hour away from civilization, much less a rest area, with no signs of life in sight.
Check it out to find out what happens….
And this post about how to be romantic.
Some things are inherently romantic, like hearts. This is useful, but the trick is to figure out what is romantic and what isn’t. Basic rule of thumb: if it’s cool, it’s not romantic. High powered rifles are not romantic. DVD players are not romantic unless playing Sleepless In Seattle.
Content Warning:
But although Bonnie’s blog is quite humorous she also has some really thought provoking posts. One post about how pornography ruins lives really makes you stop and think about the depravity of our culture by sharing the thoughts of a man whose expectations have been completely changed by pornography.
He writes-
If you’re female and you don’t possess prodigal, Einsteinian caliber intelligence that would propel the cause of humanity forward, and, if you don’t relish the idea of being alone, then . . .
throw every last dollar you have at your physical appearance.
I’m serious. Personal trainer. Porcelain veneers. High-end boob job. Get scared and get it done.
Do not extend my gender any credit. Do not hope that a guy will be in awe of your cello playing, your VP title, or your cute apartment.I promise you he won’t care. Don’t kid yourself into thinking he will. Men are programmed to respond to the visual.
Look good or you’re alone.
And a pastor comments on what he has to say-
As a pastor, I have heard this post told dozens of times in slightly different ways by men and women whose vision and values of sex and relationships have been shattered by the pervasive culture of pornography that surrounds us.
The struggle continues, even in the church. Women feel pressured to look like the seductive, air-brushed, perfect images that pervade our society, and men feel guilty for secretly desiring such perfection from their women and being disappointed when it doesn’t happen. Then that leaves us women striving all the more to find our identities and self-worth in the size of our jeans or the perfection of our appearance. In both cases, we forget we are both created in the image of God to reflect His glory. We both exchange the pursuit of that glory for far less, and this is the downward spiral that ensues.
So anyway…check her site out!
And my favorite e-pal has just moved to Texas. So she’s been recycling old posts. But before she left she posted on how boys will become men. I actually thought about posting on something similar but it was during my blogless days and she did such a good job I think I’ll just share some of what she had to say.
I want my boys to have a firm and noble vision of what it means to be a man…God’s man. I want them to be ready to defend their faith, their families, and their country. And it is hard to do that in a world that wants to make boys out of sugar and spice instead of snips and snails.
and…
Look. I’m not saying that boys can’t be or shouldn’t be sensitive. I’m not saying they can’t cry. I’m not saying that we should raise them to go around clocking people in the head. But what I am saying is that coddling and babying are the treatment for hot house flowers – not future men.
And if you like the graphic on that post, she is selling t-shirts with it. I bought one! It’s cool. Find out more here.
And it’s that time of year again…the Christmas season is upon us. Sometimes faster than I like. (I prefer Christmas to wait until after Thanksgiving!) Rev-ed at Attention Span brings up the topic of our politically correct culture and the discouragement of the phrase “Merry Christmas!”
After all, stores like Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Sears and Kohls makes a few boatloads of dollars on — dare I say it? — Christmas. Hannukuh and the new addition to the holiday sweepstakes, Kwanzaa don’t even do a fraction of the sales figures that Christmas does. If anything, I’d expect these stores to go out of their way to promote Christmas. The bottom line rules in retail. And after all, it’s hardly a religious holiday anymore.
Attention Span is also the blog where I found Chris Rice’s blog. Cool. Check out this post (that I’ve already linked to once but liked it well enough to link to it again) on how we communicate with non-Christians.
I have a friend who serves tables at a local restaurant. She’s really honest. We don’t believe the same things, and we talk about it. We have great conversations. There are often some four-letter words mixed in.
She hates serving the Sunday “after church” tables. They leave the biggest “%$#&” messes. They leave the smallest tips. And they always have a cute phrase like “Have a blessed day!” for her when they’re walking out. Sometimes they leave her a tract. You know, one of those fake $20 bills that have the “gospel message” on the other side.
Clever? Witness? No, just alienating.
“Blessed?” She says. “If they wanted me to be ‘blessed’ (whatever that means), wouldn’t they have a genuine conversation as if I’m a real person, or compliment me without that fake Christian smile, and leave me a tip that means something? I don’t think THEY even know what ‘blessed’ means.”
Interesting.
And if you are in the mood for a good laugh read this at All Things 2 All. Sounds like Catez is having fun!
The end of the world: Once I attended a series of talks by a preacher who was an expert on the end times. He said we are all going to have bar codes in the middle of our foreheads. I decided to grow a fringe. That same month a guy came up to me when I was out shopping and started telling me about the end times and the rapture (that’s not the song by Madonna). He showed me his bankcard. It had the letter b in 3 different colours. He got real close up and told me this was the mark of the beast. bbb=666. I was so relieved I was with another bank and had a cute picture of a horse on my bankcard. Then I remembered the four horsemen of the Apocalypse. I give up. I should just build a bomb shelter.
Why do we blog? That’s a question I’m sure each blogger has thought about before. I know we bloggers tend to have a bit of a, um…addiction? to this blogging lifestyle. I often hear something said and think about how I can incorportate it into a post…or something funny happens and I can’t wait to get home and blog about it. Also, when something I feel deeply about comes up I have a means of sharing it…
Vashti of Sing for Your Supper discusses reasons she blogs and why she thinks others are so addicted to blogging! Check out what she has to say.
There is an extensive community that exists among bloggers. Mine is still a small circle but mainly the same people remain in my circle. This led me to the question of “why do people blog?”
…and on the community she’s found within the blogosphere…
Other than that, I get the privilege to share and to learn random, funny, sad, deep, and sometimes fluffy facts in this new community I have found. It has become important to “check-in” on my new virtual friends. I find myself thinking about trials they have written about and wondering if things are smoothing out. I have found myself giggling out loud as I think of particularly funny posts. At times, my brain is challenged for hours or days by interesting thoughts shared for me to contemplate. I have found people on similar roads in their journey and people with completely different lives. All have been interesting.
I had other blogs I was going to link to but my computer is acting up tremendously…so maybe next weekend I’ll add those! Anyway, enjoy!
